Whenever I setup PLCnext to send data to the cloud, the naming convention is typically [username].[variable name]. If I put the same PLC program onto two different PLCnext controllers and connect both to the cloud, the metric names essentially get duplicated and Proficloud adds a "-1" at the end. Is there a way to automatically add the appliance name into the metric name to help distinguish between the different variables.

The Cloud IoT Gateway adds in the connector name. Can this be done with PLCnext?

Hi Dave,

unfortunately it is not possible to change the naming convention for the metrics in proficloud. The only way is to rename the variables in your PLCnext Engineer prject.

In the IOT Gateway the name of the Modbus connector is added to the metric, but this is a Gateway specific implementation.

Hey Arno,

Has there been any talk about updating this? Many OEMs will use the same program on all their PLCs, and this would be extremely cumbersome for an OEM to have to change the name of all their variables.

Thoughts?

I think that could be done in one of the next steps. But what would be the appliance name? Should it be something like the mac address? Or something that the user can set?

Hi Arno,

It should definitely be something that the user can define. Imagine the customer with 100s or 1000s of PLCs. It would be impossible for them to memorize that many MAC addresses. It would be much easier for them to remember a user-designed appliance name.
